Theatre Avant-Garde in Central-Eastern Europe. A Selection of Source Texts edited by Ewa Guderian-Czaplińska and Małgorzata Leyko. The anthology includes programme texts, in a vast majority never translated into Polish before, by artists of the historic avant-garde from 11 countries – from Bulgaria to Hungary – preceded by extensive introductions by contemporary scholars.

This – over four hundred pages-long – volume of texts and dissertations (…) is an academically important, substantively significant, and cognitively attractive publishing initiative. It contains, apart from strictly editorial texts (introduction, biographies of the authors of introductions to the different parts of the book, editorial notes, and index), chapters devoted to culture and avant-garde theatre of eleven Central and Eastern European countries – Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Ukraine, and Hungary (...) Each national section is preceded by a knowledgeable, authoritative, and contemporary historical and reconstructive study, presenting the generalities of avant-garde theatre, the socio-cultural context, the overall situation in theatre, and the main innovatory proposals. This is followed by texts from the period, discussing the fundamental ideas and ideas of a postulative nature, either explicitly or implicitly, and presenting the reception of avant-garde theatre. Among the authors we see the major names for the avant-garde of the time, such as Geo Milev, Emil František Burian, Andrzej Pronaszko, Witold Wandurski, Benjamin Fundoianu, H.M. Maxy, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Marko Tereszczenko, testifying to the interest of the leading lawmakers of the avant-garde in modern theatre as an important element of avant-garde art innovation (...)
